Celebrate the Small Things: Going, leaving, gone.

After a relatively short and fiery sojourn in the Australian Alliance of Atheists Facebook group, I pulled the pin this week.

I was often frustrated when trying to discuss issues, but I could have endured the frustration. For example, people suggesting that there is no evidence outside of the Bible that there ever lived a man called Jesus Christ, and me pointing out that a first century Jewish historian called Josephus wrote about Jesus, and them saying Josephus' writing was forged or faked.

I also could have put up with the name calling and disrespect, which I mainly dealt with by blocking the offenders. However, I could no longer stand the negativity. In fact, I began to feel poisoned by it, and I was concerned about the very offensive memes being posted on AAA, appearing in the feeds of my Facebook friends. For atheists to deny that there is a God is one thing, but to suggest that nothing good at all comes from religion, is really wrong and stupid.

I made some friends on AAA, and I look forward to continuing  online interactions with them, but today I am celebrating the small action of clicking a button to leave a group.

  1. It happens sometimes. And at least you found a few people worth talking to.

  2. I'm always surprised to find people discussing certain things on social media. It's an old adage that one never discusses politics, sex or religion with others. You'll find perfectly nice people have very strange views, which will affect your perception of them, and you'll never change anyone's opinion. I admit to being drawn into arguments on Yahoo articles in the beginning. It took me a while to learn not to engage. It was a waste of time that could be put to better use engaging with happy, encouraging and helpful people. I'm glad you experimented, and I'm glad you stepped away. Time is precious, I hope you spend it with people who make you happy and make your life better. :)

    1. I guess I'm too much of an idealist. I know the taboo about religion and politics, but they are extremely interesting subjects, and I wish people could talk discuss them without resorting to abuse and ridicule. I will keep on believing that people can be both real and respectful. I also feel sad for narrow minded, negative and arrogant people. However I learned many years ago that I am not the Saviour. Thanks for your thoughts and encouragement Lexa.

  3. I've found discussions on social media with people I don't know to be rather fruitless and frustrating. They often aren't there to hold open minded discussions, but throw out their own opinions like walls. After getting to know individuals, it's easier to talk about the 'tabu' subjects. Abuse and ridicule are only weapons, not useful. I hope you don't let them get to you and continue to find people to really talk with.

  4. True T. There's a lot of axe grinding going on. I'm a bit of a sucker for punishment I guess because I keep hoping for sensible discussions. Sometimes I think I'm all wrong for this world hence the title of my blog. Thanks for visiting and taking the time to comment.
